Did go out and buy his movie the other day - great stuff, but at the end you could totally tell he wasn't feeling well when his back-up dancers had better cleaner moves than he did.

As my dear pal Amanda told me yesterday its 5 months and 2 weeks until the big W day. Thanks for the reminder - as if I didn't have enough to worry about right now we have to remind me that I also have that to think about.

The plan is to head to Cincy on March 13th - the first day of spring break - to go dress shopping. I have the dress in mind that I want, I just hope it looks good. Its a bridesmaids dress that happens to come in white. Its also short so you can see my Manolos I got for the occasion - yes I did in fact pick out and purchase shoes before even setting foot in a dress shop!

Why have I waited until almost 4 months before the wedding to get a dress? Well I keep telling myself that I can get all this excess body weight off of me by myself and be ready to go in October, then December, then February, now March. As per usual I'm a big fat failure in my plans to do anything remotely positive for myself.

I did however hire a personal trainer in November. I've been working out with him 2-3 times a week since. I lost 10 pounds in the first few weeks I worked with him because I was able to closely monitor what I put into my body, then Christmas time money crunch and Christmas break practice craziness followed and I lost all track. I don't think I've put it all back on but I'm frustrated because I'm still working hard I'm just not seeing results. Thats all my fault completely, and its not for lack of trying at the gym.

I had my meeting with Calvin - my personal trainer - yesterday about my nutrition. We have a plan to get started on so that I can hopefully not want to hang myself with tulle when I'm forced to buy a dress just because I'm running out of time. The hard part is trying to keep Brian on track with my plan. For the most part he's pretty good at being supportive, says he doesn't want to be my enabler! So we bought bread for me to take to work so I can make turkey sammiches and not be tempted to run to Wendys, fruit to get my sugar fix, and Calvin hooked me up with protein powder to keep on hand when I don't have time to eat - which is all the time when I'm at work.

The hardest part about right now is I work Monday-Thursday from 2pm to 10pm. I can handle those days and keeping on schedule, but on mornings when I don't have motivation to drive to the gym before work I have to remind myself that no one at work will allow me to take 30 minutes of down time to get some cardio in there - thats why I pay 30 bucks a month for the gym. Any downtime is usually occupied by students who are getting clinical hours or athletes who need to do rehab.

On Friday comes the fun part - arriving at work between 5:15 and 5:30am. For those of you counting that means that I have approximately 6.5 hours from the time I get home before I have to be back at work on Friday. Now you tell me, would you feel energized and motivated to work after that? It takes at least an hour to wind down after getting home, then I spend most of the night tossing and turning for fear that I'll oversleep my 4am alarm. Ask any health and fitness expert and they'll tell you that when you don't get at least 7 hours of sleep a night it causes your hormones to become off balance and therefore promoting weight gain......great, cause thats exactly what I want, to look like an albino whale at my wedding!

This week I tried running with the pitchers while they did conditioning - this resulted in 1 concussion (which probably would've happened whether I was running or sleeping) and one almost concussed Athletic Trainer when a ball almost nailed her in the head on the way around. I have now resolved that I will never be on the indoor floor while the baseball team is practicing unless they pause for an injury. I will also add that I spent the next 5 minute hacking myself to death because of the cold dry air in the room. Is this normal or Exercise Induced Asthma? Either way its annoying.

This week I vow to eat better, and get all 6 of my workouts in - if not for me and the dress but for Calvin who put his faith in me and offered to help me when no one else would, and for Team Silver Fox and the Cougars (our Athletic Department name for our fitness challenge).

Someday I want to be like my Reese and run a half marathon, its an ultimate goal. I see her sticker on her car and I want to have one too. Something that is challenging and rewarding all at the same time - like my MS - but I Don't want to glue my diploma to my car.

Rest In Peace

May you find the peace you never had on Earth, and may you be moon walking with Jesus!

New Toy in the Mail

My bff Ashley turned me onto this website where you can purchase these little gadgets. The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress.

________________________________
MONDAY:
Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Belinda waiting for me. She is something of a Greek goddess - with blond hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!!

Belinda gave me a tour and showed me the machines. I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which she conducted her aerobics class after my workout today. Very inspiring!

Belinda was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time she was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week-!!

________________________________
TUESDAY:
I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door. Belinda made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air then she put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. Belinda's rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel GREAT-!! It's a whole new life for me.

_______________________________
WEDNESDAY:
The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn't try to steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot.

Belinda was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members. Her voice is a little too perky for that early in the morning and when she scolds, she gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying.

My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Belinda put me on the stair monster. Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators? Belinda told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. She said some other sh *t too.

_______________________________
THURSDAY:
Belinda was waiting for me with her vampire-like teeth exposed as her thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn't help being a half an hour late - it took me that long to tie my shoes.

Belinda took me to work out with dumbbells. When she was not looking, I ran and hid in the restroom. She sent another skinny b * tch to find me.

Then, as punishment, she put me on the rowing machine -- which I sank.
_______________________________
FRIDAY:
I hate that b * tch Belinda more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anemic, anorexic little cheerleader. If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat her with it.

Belinda wanted me to work on my triceps. I don't have any triceps! And if you don't want dents in the floor, don't hand me the damn bar bells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich.

The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher. Why couldn't it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?

________________________________
SATURDAY:
Belinda left a message on my answering machine in her grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today. Just hearing her voice made me want to smash the machine with my planner; however, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel.

________________________________
SUNDAY:
I'm having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over. I will also pray that next year my daughter (the little sh * t) will choose a gift for me that is fun -- like a root canal or a hysterectomy. I still say if God had wanted me to bend over, he would have sprinkled the floor with diamonds!!!

I would like to....

Congratulate Reagan on completing her training for her 5k and signing up. I'm glad there is someone I know in life who is motivated and doing great!! Good luck on your run Reagan!!

I on the other hand have spent the past 2 months running around like a chicken with my head cut off at work. It has been winter cross over so I was juggling mens basketball, baseball and softball. I had these grand ideas....we'll call them illusions of grandure, that I would come to work each day at 12, work out till 1:30 and shower and start work at 2.

Are you ready for the excuses to pile up:
The first week wasn't bad, I got a few workouts in but I did the shower before you go to work just in case theres no place to shower, and then work sweatty the rest of the day. I realized that the showers at DU are similar to the showers we had in junior high and high school. Open.....! Over break there was some guy creeping in the womens locker room so I was skeptical to begin with. I explained this to my pal ERich and he showed me this extra hardly used womens locker room. It was perfect. It was tiny, it had 1 shower complete with curtain, toilet and sink. What more could a girl ask for? I'll head down to the facilities guy and ask for a locker right away.

WAIT A MINUTE. It can't be that easy! I walk in to use the shower (luckily I had showered ahead of time so I wasn't totally gross) and there is a shaving kit. Now I'm not the expert on showering habits of women....but I've been around enough, and lived with enough to know that women don't use shaving kits! We toss our razors in our bags and go on our way. So this suggests to me that a man is using this locker room because he too has realized that no one uses it. So much for that!

Late night Friday practices I discover that 8-10pm are the best times to work out, there aren't a lot of people and they close the rooms down at 9 on Fridays, this is it. I will just work out then!! Yea that happened once. The rest of the time my teams kept me so busy after practices and during that I didn't have time to pee let alone hop on a treadmill.

Now all of this time I have been doing 1 yoga class a week, my absolute favorite exercise, and squeezing in some wii fit activites and counting my running around the building for work as a workout.

I finally broke down a week ago and bought a year long membership at the local fitness and racquets club. I have been there before and know some of the personal trainers if I want to use them. My mom has a membership there and she takes the womens aerobic, zumba and kickboxing classes so I thought why not. You may be thinking, don't they offer that at DU? Why yes they do. They offer Zumba 2 nights a week (right in the middle of my pre-practice treatments), they do have classes throughout the day that I could take if I want to drive in a t7AM when I Don't have to be at work until 2. They have bathrooms, locker rooms, a pool, 2 weight rooms and 2 cardio rooms......so why go to the gym membership........2 words...Shower-Curtain!!

Point of the story:
I am paying 26.00 a month to belong to a gym solely for its shower curtains! But I am enjoying working out there, they have tvs and when I go its pretty slow. I don't hop on machines next to half naked college girls, and its great!!

Next time I'll tell you what my favorite health and fitness person told me about running......and why I shouldn't....:0(

OH and for the record. I did get some new running kicks finally!! Theres a new store in Granville that sells running shoes and equipment. They're awesome, they watch you walk and run and pick out the shoes that would best suit your foot and your needs. They also let you take them out for a test run on their treadmill.

I got a pair of Mizunos. I love Mizuno shoes, they have a fantastic natural built in arch support that you don't get with a lot of running shoes!!

Accepting Donations

I need new running shoes. Its no secret to anyone. Granted I always think I need new shoes, but for real this time I need new shoes!!

So I work with injured athletes for a living and I evaluate their injuries, I am fortunate enough to work with others who do the same as I do who can evaluate my injuries.

2 weeks ago I had my best pal and co-worker Erich do some trigger point releases on my IT Band. A band of tissue that runs along the side of your thigh, it starts at the hip and ends at the knee. For me it tends to get tight when I run because I have big hips and women naturally have knees that go inward (predisposing you to ACL injuries) so this gets tight and its great to have someone loosen that up.

Anywho......last week was my best week of the year thus far I managed to get 4 workouts in, and some good runs. So obviously something had to go wrong.

Monday was the start of a new semester and with the insanity of trying to schedule workers and take care of my teams I wasn't able to get a sufficient workout in. I did 21 minutes on the treadmill (a little over a mile and some change) and managed to bruise the outside of my left foot. So again I have my pal Erich take a look and he agrees with me its just a bruise. I didn't notice it until Tuesday morning when I woke up, but its painful to walk with shoes, and now its painful to walk with shoes and without. Erich said my shoes were too battered, and they've been washed a few times as well which you should never do to running shoes. So once again proving my point that I need new running shoes. Now if I could just get my "financial advisor" to stop telling me all of the other things I need to save up for instead of buying new running shoes.

It hit the peak of painful-ness today. I was able to run through it yesterday for a while, and I iced like a good litle trainer after my workout, but this morning I cancelled my morning workout due to excessive pain. By the end of my day running back and forth from my office to the computer lab for my baseball team I could barely stand on my foot. So I drove over to Finish line in the hopes of finding new shoes. When I walk in they automatically jump on you and want to sell you stuff. Well I like to comparison shop so I head down to Hibbetts sports to see if they had similar shoes for less. They did not so when I returned to Finish Line I picked up 2 very nice and reasonably priced shoes and held them for a few minutes until I finally gave up on the workers. They wanted to dry hump me around the store earlier and now they're no where to be found. I don't know if its a sign from God or if Brian has my picture behind the counter with "DO NOT SELL TO" under it, but I left sad and shoeless.

And thats my story. I plan to take a lot of ibuprofen and head back in for a run tomorrow morning. I wish it would warm up enough to melt all of the snow so I could go on some walk/jogs through Granville. I'm too clutzy to not run through town without breaking or tearing something I need from slipping on ice. Granted I know people who can give me free treatment. I had the students do a therapeutic ultrasound treatment on my foot today just because they were there and I could haha.

My Trainer Tip for the day: Purchase a foam roller or if you're part of a Gym and they have one, take advantage of it. Roll out your muscles. For the IT band lie on your side on top of the foam roller and roll back and forth to rub out the muscles. You could even use a rolling pin on hamstrings and quads to loosen up your muscles post workout!!

-4

So I hopped on the scale and even with shoes I was 4lbs lighter. I'm pumped. I think I need to see changes to stay motivated.

I'm sitting here watching my favorite show, The Biggest Loser, and I don't feel guilty this week because I've done a good job of working out.

So where are we at for the half marathon training? Well I managed to run over a mile on the treadmill today, which is good, that's some consistency for me that I haven't had in a while. I made it a mile straight last week as well so I was psyched. Its easy for some to just go out and run one, but today I was excited because it was a 13minute mile. I usually run at 4.0 and fluctuate but typically take at least 15 minutes. So I cut 2 minutes and thats good. I also did my best to keep going but my legs were sore and tired from the weight loss burn on the elliptical machine yesterday.

By the end of the month I'd like to be able to run the 5k race function on the treadmill.

While on the treadmill today I realized there are a ton of things I need, Josh you'll appreciate this if you're reading.
1. A new supportive garment. I only have 2 good sports bras, and I can't be doing a tiny load of laundry every 2 days, Brian will shoot me!
2. New headphones, I broke my running headphones. I don't know who apple makes their ear buds for, how big are the ear holes of their designers? I can't for the life of me keep them in my ears when I'm using them at my desk to ignore my co-worker, let alone run with them in. I'm forever shoving them back in my ears. I found some sweet Nike ones at target, but will have to wait until payday.
3. New running shoes. My favorites are old and falling apart, my 2nd favorite pair of asics are half a size too small.
4. A new ipod nano, although if my itouch doesn't straighten itself out perhaps the warranty will let me get a new generation. Either way I need an ipod that holds a charge through a workout, and is compatible with my nike+ which my first generation itouch is not (but it does hold a charge).
5. New nike+ sensor. My nano didn't die for a change, but my sensor did. This is what I get for wearing my shoes with it attached to it all the time, however it did last longer than my roommates did. Her's died within at least 3 months after purchase.
6. A heart rate monitor.
7. New socks that don't make hot spots on my feet when I run.
8. A running or accountability buddy. Right now I have my boss who helps me when he comes in and says "Trish, you working out today" but once classes start back up next week, I'm worried that I'll fall out of a routine and I won't want to go workout with all the naked petite college girls. Especially if I have to come in really late for a shift to accomodate the baseball and softball schedule, then I run into the busy time for the cardio room at DU.

Well thats enough to bore Josh into wanting to do his homework........hope you like my shout outs Josh.

Capital City commit to be fit half marathon May 2nd........oh yea thats 9. registration fee!
I wish my birthday was next week instead of Brians.

Its that time of Year......

New Years resolution time again.

Last years resolution: to run a 5k race. Almost made it, but I had to attend a wedding on the day of the 5k, and it snowed a few inches, and oh yea did I mention I forgot to register?!?

They should call it new years excuses time.

This is the time of year when people vow to lose weight, quit smoking, etc. I admire those who actually do!!

Two years ago a simple resolution was made, and it was to be less lazy with my time off from work. I did a fairly decent job of keeping up with that only because I was in grad school and I had a roommate who was very motivational in keeping busy with workouts and research, and when I did have down time I tried not to make myself feel bad for being lazy, because I typically worked my butt off the rest of the week with classes, work, and traveling for work.

So this year, like always I'll make a resolution to do something. The question is will I actually accomplish that?

1. To stop drinking soda/pop whatever you call it in your part of the country. The main culprit is my dear friend Coca Cola. I may not completely take myself away from it, but only allow myself the coke as a reward or a special occasion. I do love Sonic's Cherry Cokes.

2. To finally run my half marathon. It takes place on May 2nd, the Capital City Half Marathon. I have two, well three, big obstacles in my way right now.
a.) Work Schedule
b.) Registration costs. It was 55.00 at its cheapest and goes up every week until the race deadline.
c.) I spent the day signing off on pre-participation physicals for our out season athletes and didn't much feel like going for a run. So I pushed myself down to the cardio room (aka cardivascular incidence room) where I hopped on the treadmill to make one more attempt at pacing myself.

They like to save money over the weekend, or save the environment, or something silly so that means no AC in the building over the weekend. Never mind that people work in there over the weekend, a school that charges over 40K a year needs to save money???? So that made for a nice steamy jog.

I was able to jog much more than past few runs, mainly because I could pace myself on the treadmill. Granted I was going fairly slow at a 15min mile for the majority of the runs, but I was at least able to stick with it.

When I got off the treadmill I thought my shins were going to snap in half and I considered taking the elevator back up to the second floor to retrieve my stuff and wrap on some ice. I did however think that if my old lady legs could carry me on the treadmill for 35 minutes I could make it up 2 flights of stairs....and I did.

I grabbed 4 bags of ice, wrapped two on my shins (it felt amazing) and took the other two with me and stole a roll of flexi wrap (its basically ceran wrap for ice bags, its a wonderful invention) not sure what I was going to do with it once I got home seeing as how a hip icing takes more than 1 person to wrap them on. Well I got the bright idea to stuff them into the seat belts so they were pressed up tightly to my hips.....and it worked. However if I would've been pulled over, I don't know how I would explain the situation to the officer.....

Today was a rest day. It was great. My shins feel like they're going to explode when i squat down, its like squeezing a balloon but one that causes pain. I unfortunately didn't take the time to ice today.

Tomorrow I need to attempt to go for a jog early in the morning before I head into work at noon. Biggest Loser is on at 8 and I work till 8 so I have to hurry home so I can watch and be inspired to go for a run again on Wednesday even though Im positive I won't want to after tomorrows run.

Keep on Keepin on!

First Week

I finished my Masters degree in June. A 6 year process, perhaps more, in the making. I can't remember a time where I wasn't thinking about wanting to get it, planning out ways to get it, studying for the GRE's to get into school, stressing over taking the GRE's, looking at websites trying to figure out exactly what I wanted my Masters in. All I knew was that I wanted it.

Finally....after a year I earned it.

I moved home in June and while I had a job over the summer, my current job didn't start until August. I sat in my room watching TV rotting my brain until 5:00 when it was time to head up to the baseball game that I had to work. I started to become extremely bored and almost depressed. I had had this goal for grad school for such a long time and I finally achieved it and then........nothing. What am I to do now? What do I have to work towards? I have a Masters, a job, a boyfriend, a place to live, and eventually money coming in.....now what?

Well my new years resolution was to run a 5k. My schedule didn't work out very well for running on a regular basis and the 5k I wanted to run for a local high school fundraiser was over a weekend that I had to work. So....its only September 21st I still have time to run one. However 3+ miles is still not enough of a goal to equal the difficulty of getting a masters and that feeling I had on graduation day.

So here it is. I've decided to run a half marathon, or at least train for one.

I purchased a book during July that I've finally had the time to sit down and read:
Dawn Dias is hysterical. She is right up my alley with her sarcastic humor and her general view of life. So here I am Dawn, following your advice. I can only hope that my posts will be half as humorous as some of her journal entries that she's included in this book. I'm recommending it to friends to read as well.

Her first piece of advice is to sleep on it, when deciding to run a marathon. Let me say Ive slept on it for a few months and I'm sure I want to run one....well half of one as I keep telling everyone...."half".

The next piece of advice is to tell people what you're planning on doing. Why? These people become your "accountability buddies". They will ask you on a regular basis if you're still training, still planning on it, and how your training is going. Or in my case, your coach you work with will run into your office not to talk about an injury with you, but to ask if you want to go with him to run a half marathon in Indianapolis in April......a week later than the one you planned on running in Athens Ohio. Well I'm a procrastinator if nothing else so the idea of pushing something back a week is always enticing, however I don't know if I could dedicate a whole weekend to traveling to Indy to drop dead. At least if I die in Athens, my brother is there to help identify the body, and they can just wheel me over to the Medical College @ Ohio U and dissect me for the sake of education.

So here I am. I am one week into training. Yesterday I did the Dawn recommended RW for 45 minutes and believe it or not, I feel fantastic. So far this week I've Run/Walked (RW) a little over 12 miles. The run walk helps you build endurance for the run so that you can build up to run run.

Yesterday was by far the best run I've done that wasn't on a treadmill. With a treadmill you're constantly at the same pace, me and the road....different story. For some reason I take off and then wonder why I can't run very far for very long. Well I'm trying to incorporate my momma into this training schedule. So I had her come with me a few times this past week. Yesterday she decided to ride her bike as opposed to walking, since I run as much as I can when I'm out I get pretty far ahead of her. I paced myself on Wednesdays run with the Nike + and I was running an 8.3 minute mile....I need to slow my ass down. So yesterday I paced myself with my mom riding her bike slowly. Moved back to a 10.30 mile. Much better. I know I took time off of the original pacing time but trying to get people to understand that I can't run for more than a quarter of a mile if that by going 8.3 at this time. Also the other thing thats hard to get people to understand is that I'm starting at ground zero here. I haven't been running regularly since before I graduated, and I definitely haven't been running outside regularly. Treadmills are good and what I've been able to squeeze in when I'm at work. So I need to start somewhere.

April 5th is Race Day!! In Athens.
